Thrifting the Trends

Special Occasions: Sweet, Glam & Trendy Valentine’s Day Dresses

February 7, 2015 by Double Minted

The thrift store is a great place to run for a last-minute look for a special occasion. Thrift stores are like department stores…there is so much variety it’s almost one-stop shopping. With Valentine’s Day coming up, we hit up some of our favorite East Bay (Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley) thrift and vintage stores to find some cute looks to wow our sweeties on date night.

There are so many different approaches you can take with Valentine’s Day style. Do you go sweet or sexy? Chic or carefree? It depends on your personal style, your beau and where he’s taking you, so we kept an open mind and picked outfits for every variety of V-Day.

Thrifty Finds: Cheap & Trendy Fall Sweaters

December 14, 2014 by Double Minted

Sweaters are pretty ubiquitous at thrift stores, which means lots of opportunity to find really cute styles.

With so much selection, you have to keep an eye out for quality. Look for higher end labels, quality materials (like wool and cashmere), and most importantly, minimal pilling.

But if you find a really cute sweater that’s covered with pilling, you don’t necessarily have to abandon it. Buy a pack of cheap disposable razors and gently shave off the pills, using a lint roller to pick up the debris. It’s very possible to make a sweater look almost new with a little patience.

Here are some of our latest cozy finds.

Put Together: How to Transition a Piece from Summer to Fall

November 9, 2014 by Double Minted

If you’re like most people, then the weather isn’t the only thing that changes with the seasons. Your wardrobe does too.

Here in Northern California, Indian Summer lasts well into October sometimes (and this year into November!), so you have to be prepared to juggle hot sun one day and cool clouds the next. No separate summer & fall wardrobes here—we have to be flexible.

Here are a few pieces that we’re styling for both hot and cold weather.
